In her current role as Vice President for Risk Engineering at PayPal, Sandhya Kapoor leads ~800 employees around the world and owns the core risk systems for Payments, Onboarding, Credit, Disputes, Collections and Analytics Data Services. Her organization is responsible for optimizing the speed, security, regulatory compliance, and customer experience for money movement as billions of dollars in transactions move daily through PayPal’s global payment systems.
Sandhya was recruited to PayPal in 2023 following 6 years at Meta, where she held leadership positions inside Data & AI Infrastructure Organization. Before moving to Meta in 2017, she played key strategic and operational roles in transforming IBM’s cloud computing unit.
She started her career at IBM as a software development engineer in cutting edge Distributed Computing Enviornment (DCE), rose rapidly into senior management, and oversaw the creation of IBM Watson Natural Language Processing redesign and scale the IBM Watson Health cloud offerings . In her many roles at IBM, she was deeply engaged in Cloud strategy and execution. She oversaw technical due diligence for IBM’s acquisition and integration of Lombardi Software into BPM/ODM enterprise offerings. She led engineering for acquired businesses such as Softlayer and its integration as the IaaS layer with IBM's Cloud.
She is an Executive in Residence at the McCombs School of Business, University of Austin, Texas, where she mentors mid-career professionals looking to move into the technology industry. She serves on the board of UdayanCare, USA Chapter, a nonprofit that promotes a nurturing home and excellent education for every orphaned and abandoned child in India. Sandhya provides an opportunity for higher education for every young adult, and especially every young woman, in India.
With a major chunk of her career devoted to IBM, a multinational technology corporation, she pioneered the use of IBM Watson technology that focuses on Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision.
At Meta, Sandhya resolved at scale analytical challenges by running a large number of Presto clusters spanning data centers across the globe. She designed and led the development of projects to provide cutting edge features for the highly interactive query engine serving “Meta Scale” analytics needs. Sandhya led projects to enhance Apache Spark for batch processing. She was instrumental in bringing efficiencies to MLOps pipelines for gleaning online and offline insights from real time data streams.
Over the course of 2 decades, Sandhya has designed, developed and deployed Enterprise software in various industries. In addition, she has collaborated closely with defense organizations in the US and UK to develop cutting-edge Tactical Threat Management systems using advanced Mathematics and complex Machine Learning models.
